A passion for horses, a love of learning, and the indomitable will to succeed. That’s all it took for Wellington’s own Clementine Goutal to make a full life for herself—and she created a service to help adolescents looking to balance their goals and obligations like she did.  During an exclusive interview with Quest Magazine’s Alex Travers, Clementine explains how her connection with horses, her education, and her drive for excellence resulted in Upper Echelon Academy.

The concept behind her tutoring company seems like a novelty but she explains that the inspiration actually stemmed back to when she was an adolescent and was in the position of UEA’s clientele:

“I commuted to Florida to ride and was myself tutored by Andy Bowers, who is now my partner and a dear friend,” says Clementine. “I had such a seamless transition from our homeschool setting back into private school in New York each season, because Andy took care of all the odds and ends. He coordinated with everyone who required time and energy from me, so that my academics were uncompromised, and I never felt like I sacrificed one goal for the pursuit of another.”

Clementine and her team of education professionals offer innovative tutoring services with the same time-management tactics she learned from a young age to help a new generation of student-athletes balance their activities, academics, and work careers. They foster the same love of learning and passion for sports that helped Clementine reach her own goals.

“The evolution of UEA has been organic and where we saw needs we developed solutions. Right now we are so proud to launch UEA Beginnings for young students Pre-K through 5th grade. We felt there was an inadequacy in the quality of education for children of this age, who still need small classroom settings to flourish. We brought in spectacular early-learning specialists and created a cost-effective option for year-round students.”

About Upper Echelon Academy

Conveniently located in the heart of Wellington, near the horse show, Upper Echelon Academy provides individualized tutoring services and an accredited program for students year round.  UEA provides instruction from a selection of more than 30 teachers, and works with students from all over the globe. The academy has specialists in more than 12 languages, college preparation, standardized testing, special education, early learning development, and even adult education.

“Resources such as a study hall, writing center, and a Sports Psychologist are at all of our students’ fingertips.  A lot of the instruction is one-on-one education in our clients’ homes; we also have a state of the art tutoring center located on Southshore Boulevard for those who prefer to work in a classroom or office setting.”

Clementine works closely with Andy, his wife Kate, and Heather Youngblood to make sure UEA students have every resource available to them. They work with schools, coaches, doctors, parents, and a myriad of other parties to ensure students never sacrifice their passions or wellbeing. “Our whole mantra is this balancing act, which we have down to a science! We want to see our students thriving in every domain from the classroom to the arena, and smiling at the end of the day.”

Britto to be special guest at American Cancer Society Benefit

The 59th Annual American Cancer Society’s Palm Beach Benefit is spicing it up this year with Romero Britto.  The Brazilian-born, Miami-made pop artist Romero Britto contributed his bright signature art for the event invitations and has continue to drive the inspiration for what promises to be the most colorful and coolest benefit The Mar-a-Lago Club has ever hosted.

“Britto’s vibrant, bold, and colorful patterns reflect his optimistic view of the world – which is one of the reason we chose to align our event with him. Through its research, the American Cancer Society creates optimism for cancer patients worldwide,” said event co-chairman Shelley Menin.

Chairs: Shelley Menin & Marla Garchik

Menin’s co-chair Marla Garchik added, “We’re grateful to add Romero Britto as a corporate partner this year and are delighted to be collaborating with him for a spectacular, colorful event!”

The third Rock Palm Beach continues in 2017 with another musical extravaganza at The Mar-a-Lago Club on Friday, February 10 at 8:00pm and will feature lavish food stations, VIP Lounges, and several live acts in the Club’s Grand Ballroom.

Also, new this year, the annual event will host a black-tie Sponsors Dinner on Tuesday, February 7 at 6:00pm hosted by Fantastic Finishes in the famed Gold and White Ballroom at The Mar-a-Lago Club which will also present several musical acts.

Other event corporate partners include the Addison Hines Charitable Trust, Braman Motorcars, Fantastic Finishes, Meat Market, and the Private Client Reserve of US Bank.

If the hard-to-miss, lively invitations requesting “colorful chic attire” are indicative of what’s to come at the event, the crowd will be carousing and dancing the night away until the wee hours!

Using hand-held power tools, artist Salem Barker feels the artistic spirits and works freehand with wood  to give life to his creative expression.

As Barker quotes Henry David Thoreau, “The world is but a canvas to our imagination.”

A former tool and die maker, Barker uses high voltage electricity to highlight his wood pieces with black impressions to emulate lightening.  His largest wood sculpture is 12 feet tall. Barker also sculpts with stone, bronze and aluminum.  According to Barker, geared and mechanical forms are seen harmonized with rhythmic organic movements of his sculptures, contrasting man made geometric shapes made solely for power delivery, and nature’s forms made for beauty and the perpetuation of life.  He  is looking forward to showcasing his latest work when he returns to the 2017 Palm Beach Fine Craft Show.

Armory Art Center prepares for Purple Reign Event on January 26th

The world of popular culture was rocked in 2016 with the unexpected loss of several major Rock Icons.  Nowhere was the loss of the artist Prince Rogers Nelson known better simply as Prince felt more deeply than in his hometown of Minneapolis.  In a nod to the trendsetting aspects of Prince’s multi-decade career, and out of respect for Prince’s indomitable style, Minneapolis St. Paul Magazine joined forces with the Minneapolis Art Institute to create a Fashion Designer tribute based on Prince’s musical hits.

Billed as a Special Kiss to Prince, the 2016 Fashionopolis Event featured runway designs inspired by the one-or-a-kind hit maker, Prince, who was known as an Icon of fashion, style, music and creativity.  Eight fashion designers, from Minneapolis to Manhattan to Amsterdam, including “fan favorite” from television’s Project Runway, Christopher Straub, created ensembles to celebrate the Pop Life of the enigmatic superstar who’s pioneering style was flamboyant, sexy, and always impossibly cool.

Winner of seven Grammy awards, a Golden Globe and an Academy Award, Prince was one of the best-selling musicians of all-time.  Hits included Little Red Corvette, 1999, Purple Rain, Kiss, and When Doves Cry.

Stress Free Holiday…Easier than YOU Think!

Holidays can be overwhelming…presents, parties, family issues, and that’s just the start of the holiday stress list!

We know that stress isn’t good for our bodies or our emotional state and sadly, it can affect those close to us. When triggered by fear or stress, we may feel out of control, act irrationally and over consume (aka the holiday weight). This is because there is a physical as well as emotional response to stress.

In fact, thousands of tiny chemicals are released into our systems every time we are triggered by fear or stress. This hormonal chemical dump is only a part of the human “Fight/Flight Response.” Our subconscious mind, which is much faster than our conscious mind, also tells our liver to stop detoxing, our digestion to shut down and sends energy to the large limb muscles getting the body ready to run, fight or hide. Because our subconscious can’t distinguish between a real threat (bear chasing you) or a perceived threat (thought of a bear chasing you), it automatically triggers the “Fight/Flight” reaction every time. Self-preservation is always the subconscious’ top priority

Maribel and Susan

The good news is that you can override this reaction and even program in a new response to stress. It’s called The Whole Brain Body Posture. It’s simple and only takes a few minutes!

So when things get tense…politic talk or unsolicited relationship advice at the big holiday dinner…instead of going for another glass of wine or plate of food, take a five minute “time out” and try The Whole Brain Posture technique

I met Susan under sad circumstances– I was grieving, needed answers and most importantly, needed to cope and move forward.  Susan gave me the tools and the hope I needed to plug through every painful day.  I’ve invited Susan to share her fabulous energy, hope, and expertise with our subscribers and look forward to her monthly Altima blog contribution on mental and spiritual well-being. ” Maribel Alvarez
