Altima’s trusted travel guru from WIMCO,  Heather Warburton, shares yet another fabulous travel experience–This time she takes us to Turks and Caicos, with 12 girlfriends and recommends their  favorite dining spots, accommodations and travel tips.

Friends & Fun in Turks & Caicos

by Heather WarburtonI had been looking forward to Turks & Caicos all winter. One of my best friends from high school is getting married this summer, and about 12 of us girls flew down for a bachelorette party.I landed in Turks to be greeted by the incredibly sweet Keisha, the resident WIMCO concierge on island, bearing a sign with my name and WIMCO’s logo. We chatted a bit, and then off I went with the driver WIMCO had arranged (a Black Car SUV, with chilled water).

Before the bachelorette festivities began, I scoped out a few villas in Turtle Cove. These were mainly one bedroom villas that are on the beach but have some foliage out front, so it’s not a complete ocean view. Villa Sea Edge (TNC SED) is a cute villa for a couple that has visited Turks before and loves the independence of their own place. The kitchen and living room open up onto a patio with a pool, and you can walk right down to the beach. Upstairs there is a bed and bathroom with a great view–I’m sure waking up there is wonderful. The villa reminded me of a studio apartment in the sense that you have everything you need. I could see clients who like staying in Gustavia in St. Barths enjoying this spot.

Many people like to talk about how important voting is, how it’s your civic duty and responsibility as an adult.  Eric Liu, Director of the Aspen Institute Citizenship and American Identity Program,  agrees with all that, but he also thinks its time to bring joy back to the ballot box.  The former political speechwriter offers a powerful analysis of why anyone eligible should show up on Election Day.

For most, September means back-to-school, back-to-work and back-to-reality which means its the perfect time for savvy  and travelers with discerning taste to pack up and go!   Europe saves its true charms for September, and Mykonos is no exception. More options on where to stay, easier to make last minute dining decisions without reservations and better deals available are just some of the perks. A devoted foodie, I particularly enjoyed  ‘An Eating diary from a perfect week in Mykonos‘ by my  trusted friend and true expert, Heather Warburton.  Below is a small representation of the article.   (To view complete article)

There are many reasons to go to Mykonos—the color of the water alone, the music, and the stunning villas—but undoubtedly, the food scene will convince you. If you intend to eat light and vegetarian, you’ll find no better place, and then again, if you’re more into feta cheese and baklava, you’ll be just fine too.

I recently spent five days in Mykonos in early July, and in addition to Katrin- family-run restaurant featured above these are some of my favorites:

Spilia

Spilia

Spilia

Built into a cove of Agia Anna, next to Kalafati beach, Spilia is one of the more elegant restaurants on island. The restaurant is multi-level, giving each seating area an intimacy occasionally lacking in Mykonos, and the soft blue water is truly at your feet (half our table took a dip between courses). Their lobster pasta is one of the signature dishes, and a waiter caught and opened sea urchins in plain site, ensuring total freshness. Can’t miss item? The fudge-like chocolate cake. Trust me, you want it.

Other top restaurants recommended are Interni for dinner; Scorpios for dining and partying; Kiki’s Tavern, the romantic Avra and the Belvedere.  images (1)

I received a call from my dear friend Susan, announcing her new position as manager of 120% Lino on Worth Avenue.  I wasn’t even aware my favorite  boutique had a location in Palm Beach!  I made it a point to stop by and was thrilled to discover the Worth Avenue store carried the easy to wear South of France stylish pieces with the quality cool natural breathable fabrics which only Italians know how to produce.

After making a beeline for the sale section, I walked out feeling 10 degrees cooler and looking like I just got off a super-yacht in Capri:

The effortless yet stylish linen shift dress chicfully accessorized with necklace and a handbag that travel well from ship to shore.

A summer weekend staple for me and my family,  is an extended gourmet surfside brunch at Bennys on the Beach.  Frankly it’s the only place offering quality dining in a casual environment with a fabulous view, and an actual breeze.   Chef Jeremy Hanlon is continuing adding delectable creations to the menu, so going with a big group is key if you want to do a serious tasting!  In addition to their Signature Pancakes and famous Beach Bread variations, some of the new breakfast favorites include Lake Worth Crab Cake (featured above); Chorizo Breakfast Tacos and Shrimp & Grits.

The freshness of the food and the exquisite preparation by internationally acclaimed American Celebrity Chef Jeremy Hanlon, formerly of New York’s Restaurant Daniel (as in Boulud) is what makes this charming oceanfront destination a formidable gourmet experience.

Bakon Vodka Bloody Mary

Those of us who associate beach and al fresco with libations truly appreciate their extensive and creative cocktail menu.  I normally opt for their bottle of Rosé de Provence kept in a chilled bucket within reach,  but only after I’ve indulged in one of their formidable Bloody Mary variations– Bloody Maria with tequila was my favorite until I tried the Bakon Vodka Bloody!

Benny’s is open for surfside dining seven days a week  from 7am to 9pm.  To view complete menu or make reservation visit www.bennysonthebeach.com

It was a Purrfect night in Palm Beach where the sandals and sundresses came out in full force to shop at Sequin Worth Avenue to support Palm Beach Island Cats.  Board Members Coco Schefmeyer, Kim and Paul Puffenbarger, George J. Palladino, and Florence Berney joined with Executive Director Leslie Moss to host a Meow-worthy evening of refreshments and shopping for the many Cool Cats who attended.

Particularly popular purchases were the feline-themed charm bracelets and necklaces.  Although the new Astrology-inspired Star Maps collection drew lots of attention along with Sequin’s new Color Karma line
