Carolina Wickenburg is a New York–based sculptor whose work ranges from life–size public statues to portraits of her impressive clientele of European royals and distinguished art patrons. Her sculptures are striking, emotive and figurative pieces cast in bronze.

“Her Hippos” are born

Carolina’s foray into wearable sculpture was prompted by her love of jewelry and matured into a fundraising project for breast cancer research. Her hand–sculpted hippos are cast in gold, silver or brass, and inlaid with emerald eyes. Baby Hippos have recently been added to the family! Adopt a baby hippo and support Breast Cancer Research Foundation.

Why was the hippo your inspiration for this project?

“Sculpting is an ancient, yet timeless, art form. The hippo is an ancient Egyptian mythological figure; a protector of women. The hippopotamus seemed the perfect subject for its reassuring, strong yet sensuous form, as well as its mythology. They came together for me. They made sense.”

How did you come into sculpting in particular?

“With a major in Psychology and a minor in Art, I began my career as a social worker focusing on the assimilation of immigrants into their local communities. During that period, we opened a community arts center. My early work there brought sculpture to my attention and that’s when I began to dabble. I quickly realized how much I enjoyed this hands-on approach to art.”

Do you prefer to sculpt in stone or clay?

“While I enjoy transforming stone into “flesh”, stone remains rigid and structured. The malleability of clay, however, allows for spontaneity and the freedom to let the piece evolve naturally, and as needed. The tactile feel and flexibility of the clay. The three-dimensionality of it. It’s magical.”

Tell me about your creative process?

“Hah! I do enjoy the process, but the creative part of sculpting is highly intense, intricate and introspective. You are very much in the moment.” With an eye for detail, Carolina follows a strict approach to capture her subjects using photographs and live sittings. After completing her piece in clay (which can take up to 6 months or more depending on the size), a rubber mold is made and eventually a Bronze piece. Her goal is to capture the essence of her subjects. In her full-bodied pieces, she uses the body’s anatomy, its muscles and facial features to evoke an emotion or capture a feeling. For her portraits, her goal is not only to resemble her subjects and convey their essence, but to make each portrait a piece that stands on its own.  After every portrait is complete, Carolina prides herself in asking “would I like to have this sculpture in my house?” Her answer has to be “yes”. She finds portraits the most difficult of her works.

Carolina

I have heard that you were born to be an artist. Tell me about that.

“I am surrounded by artists!”, she laughs. “My father was very creative. He was an avid painter and my brother is highly artistic.  And as you might expect, I married into an “artsy” family as well.”

About Carolina Wickenburg

Born in Havana, Cuba, Carolina immigrated to the US at an early age. She and her Austrian husband, reside in New York (when not traveling to the family hotel, Casa Mia, in Austria). They have two sons. As a successful NYC based architect hailing from a long line of artists (including world-renowned Alfred Wickenburg), and with a creative eye himself, her husband recognized Carolina’s talent and encouraged her to pursue art shortly after their marriage.

The brainchild of Lourdes de Guardiola, Milou’s curated collection is often described as chic, timeless, with an equestrian twist. Daughter of one of Wellington’s pioneer developers, horses became Lourdes’s life at the age of six, ultimately giving way to a successful 15 year career in the show jumping business.

“My husband Michael Morrissey and I have travelled the globe winning championships in the hunters, jumpers and equitation. Michael is a proven international show jumper, having represented team USA on multiple occasions overseas in Europe.  I turned to coaching some of the best junior riders at some of the most elite shows around the world.  A year ago I decided to venture into another passion of mine, fashion.  So I launched MilouPalmBeach.com,  an on-line clothing boutique,” says de Guardiola. The equestrian influence is apparent in the cool, effortless, hip but chic Milou collection.

Lourdes’s success and loyal following prompted her to launch a pop-up this past season at Palm Beach’s International Polo club. “I only see great things for this business, with local and international stores on the horizon.”

Private trunk shows continue during the summer with the next one scheduled during a special Happy Hour co-hosted by Ryan Beckett on June 27th at Meat Market Palm Beach!

Meat Market  will be offering complimentary hors d’oeuvres. Guests are encouraged to stay for dinner as 10% of proceeds will go towards Danny and Ron’s Rescue in Wellington.

Unpublished letters reveal an unknown love story, the torment of Hemingway’s young muse and the resuscitation of the aging writer’s career.

Andrea di Robilant, acclaimed author of A Venetian Affair, now gives us the remarkable story of Ernest Hemingway’s love affair with both the city of Venice and the muse he found there—a vivacious eighteen-year-old who inspired the man thirty years her senior to complete his great final work.  The author attributes his research experience as a journalist to his use of letters in his writings.  “You know them closely, you understand what they know. Perhaps, more importantly”, he continues, “You accept them. You don’t judge them as immoral or obnoxious.”  The author Di Robilant will preside at the unveiling of the book on June 6th at Rizzoli, 1133 Broadway, New York Andrea will also be discussing his book in Washington DC at a private venue on June 5th. (Please email me to request an invitation to the exclusive book-signing and conversation with Andrea di Robilant)

Autumn in Venice: Ernest Hemingway and His Last Muse

In the fall of 1948 Hemingway and his fourth wife traveled for the first time to Venice, which Hemingway called “a goddam wonderful city.” He was a year shy of his fiftieth birthday and hadn’t published a novel in nearly a decade. At a duck shoot in the lagoon he met and fell in love with Adriana Ivancich, a striking Venetian girl just out of finishing school. Di Robilant—whose great-uncle moved in Hemingway’s revolving circle of bon vivants, aristocrats, and artists—re-creates with sparkling clarity this surprising, years-long relationship. Hemingway used Adriana as the model for Renata in Across the River and into the Trees, and continued to visit Venice to see her; when the Ivanciches traveled to Cuba, Adriana was there as he wrote The Old Man and the Sea. This illuminating story of writer and muse—which also examines the cost to a young woman of her association with a larger-than-life literary celebrity—is an intimate look at the fractured heart and changing art of Hemingway in his fifties.

The hardcover will be released and available for purchase June 5.  List price $26.95  Pre-order now at $12.99 on Amazon

He teaches four classes a week at two American universities in Rome and reserves two days for researching and writing his books.

Some early reviews

“Rich with new material, some based on Italian sources, di Robilant’s lively and affecting double portrait brings a fresh perspective to the much-examined life of an all-too-human writer.” —Steve Paul, Booklist (starred review)

“A sensitive recounting of a writer’s doomed fantasy.” Kirkus Reviews

“One of the most wrenching and scandalous love stories in all of literary biography . . . di Robilant reconstructs their tale with remarkable precision and a wealth of unpublished materials . . . what emerges is an ample, finely detailed fresco of the last stage of Hemingway’s life, a kaleidoscopic succession of relationships, passions, trips, editorial disputes, drinking binges, set against the backdrop of northeast Italy . . . [Autumn in Venice] has all the intrigue and emotion of a novel.” —Pietro Spirito. Il Piccolo (Italy)

“An evocative and alluring tale of love and death . . . In his effusive letters to Adriana, Hemingway laid bare his extremely passionate, generous, and contradictory nature.” Mirella Serri, La Stampa (Italy)
