Photographer Maria Svarbova at Contessa Gallery on April 8th
Maria Svarbova, Harmonization
By Brandy Guthrie
Contessa Gallery will welcome world renowned photographer Maria Svarbova for a personal appearance on April 8th on Worth Avenue.
Space is limited. Please click here to RSVP.
Born in 1988, Svarbova currently lives in Slovakia where she was named one of Forbes 30 under 30. Informed by a strong interest in Socialist era architecture and public spaces, her transformative photography provides a modern freshness to every scene, highlighting the depth and range of her creative palette. Throughout her meticulously composed work one finds constant, yet silent tensions between clean and smooth surfaces, or thematic dream-like scenes produced with objects considered ordinary. In her striking images, one finds the human body is relegated to more or less a peripheral afterthought, often portrayed as aloof and demure rather than substantive. Maria’s unique work continues to garner international acclaim and is setting new precedents in contemporary photography as she departs from traditional portraiture and embraces boundless experimentation with space, color, and atmosphere.
As a 2018 Hasselblad Master, Maria was the recipient of a medium format camera from the leading manufacturer renowned for its iconic camera designs and uncompromising image quality. The result is In the Swimming Pool, Maria’s largest series to date, inspired by her fascination with the geometric beauty of public swimming pools in Slovakia. The colours, tones, and symmetry of the compositions bring a futuristic and surreal quality to spaces considered antiquated or retro. The stillness and artificial detachment of the figures relate to the cool, sterile setting and offer the viewer a uniquely pleasurable visual experience. Think minimalism with a futuristic twist, constructed by a visionary that seamlessly blends people and places into singular harmony.
Contessa Gallery will be showing work from Maria’s In the Swimming Pool Series at Market Art + Design, returning to The Bridgehampton Museum in July. The premier east coast art fair is back for its ninth year and will feature 80 top galleries presenting the best in modern and contemporary art in the heart of the Hamptons.
