Tori Eversmann, author of ‘The Immortals’ will be at Meat Market Palm Beach for a book signing Tuesday, November 15th. Guests will also have the opportunity to meet her husband, First Sergeant Matt Eversmann, who was immortalized in the epic film Black Hawk Down  and inspired the lead character in her book.

A portion of proceeds raised at the event from book sales or dinner will benefit American Humane- American Humane provides a) lifesaving service dogs to veterans suffering from Post-Traumatic Stress;b) protects America’s hard-working military dogs and recognizes their heroic contributions to our country- both on and off the battlefield.

I had the pleasure of meeting this talented author and her honorable husband on several occasions. Extremely impressed by an inexplicable bond between the two of them, I purchased a copy of The Immortals .  It was not only entertaining but enlightening to realize how little we know about the challenges faced by the family members left behind.

About the Immortals:

Eversmann’s semi-autobiographical character, Calli Coleman, abruptly lands in the role of Army wife in provincial Sackets Harbor, New York, when her husband is recalled to active military duty during the Iraq War. Calli and her young family face the adversity of transitioning to their new military life and the complicated social hierarchy that goes with it. Uprooted from their hometown, family and friends, their new life as an Army family becomes even more unsettling when Calli learns that her husband will soon be deployed to Iraq.

“New friendships sustain Calli through loneliness and the ever-present specter of widowhood. ‘The Immortals’ is an examination of marriage, friendship, war and death,” said Eversmann.

Tori Eversmann

Tori Eversmann

Tori Eversmann, wife of retired First Sergeant Matt Eversmann, the soldier who inspired the lead character in the book and Jerry Bruckheimer’s movie Black Hawk Down, has captivating stories of her time as an Army wife and its aftermath in the post-9-/11 world. Amid adversity, Tori worked tirelessly as a single parent, a cheerleader for her husband’s wounded men at Walter Reed Army Medical Center, and as a conduit of information from the front lines during her husband’s 15-month deployment in the Iraq war, all to keep her and the other Army wives afloat. Tori received her B.A. in English/Creative Writing from Skidmore College and currently lives in West Palm Beach with her husband, daughter, two dogs and two cats.

Particularly popular purchases were the feline-themed charm bracelets and necklaces.  Although the new Astrology-inspired Star Maps collection drew lots of attention along with Sequin’s new Color Karma line

CATS by Astrid Looks like Jail Fresh off of celebrating their well-attended Annual Volunteer Appreciation Picnic which was recently held at Nick & Johnnie’s , the supporters of Palm Beach Island Cats continue to be pleased with the results of the local organization’s efforts which operate 365 days a year with no government support.  The Trap, Neuter, Release approach to managing feral felines in Palm Beach is one of the leading programs of its kind in the country.  Advocates of responsible pet ownership, Palm Beach Island Cats provides food, sterilization, vaccines and other medical care to the Island’s feral felines.  For more information or to make a donation, please visit pbislandcats.org.

From Ascot to Aspen, international photographer whose permanent display of collectable works hang in Worth Avenue’s The Silver Fund, continues to collect accolades on both sides of the Pond. Last year, Astrid was commissioned as an Official Arts Photographer for England’s Royal Ascot and this year (July), a collection of her remarkable unseen works of horses from around the world will be unveiled at Aspen’s Gallery 1949.

Renowned for her compelling, sensitive portraiture of horses, cats and dogs, her fine art photographs sell to a global audience with private commissions taking her around the world. When last in Palm Beach, Astrid’s attention was snared by the work of Palm Beach Island Cats.  She donated time and energy documenting some of the hundreds of homeless cats cared for the charity. Several former Palm Beachers recently returned to the Island and inquired as to what happened to all of the stray cats that used to gather outside restaurants begging for scraps and keep residents awake at night with their mating rituals.

While greatly reduced in numbers, rest assured that Palm Beach’s furriest residents are still on the island.  Thanks to the efforts of Palm Beach Island Cats, the town’s cats are less of a nuisance and more of a plus.  Since humane management began in 2010 by Palm Beach Island Cats, the island’s stray cat population has been significantly reduced from over 750 to less than 550.  The cats which help shrink the rodent population on the island, live in well-managed colonies where they are fed, watered, and cared for by Palm Beach Island Cats.

The program which currently receives no government funding, and operates with a staff of volunteers has been held up as an example to other municipalities across the country for effective and humane treatment of homeless cats who are in need of compassionate care. Through no fault of their own, these cats have been abandoned and left to fend for themselves which most often leads to more cats. Spring is typically Kitten Season, however due to the ongoing neutering efforts by Palm Beach Island Cats, each year this has been less impactful in Palm Beach. (Cats can reproduce when they are as young as 4 to 6 months old.)

Seventy percent of cats entering shelters are killed, and that number jumps to nearly 100% of feral cats and kittens. That’s why the Trap/Neuter/Release efforts of Palm Beach Island Cats is effective as well as humane.

Advocates of responsible pet ownership, Palm Beach Island Cats provides food, sterilization, vaccines and other medical care to needy cats. Your support of this 501(c)(3) non-profit corporation, is tax deductible.
